Thanks to everyone who has voted on our options for New Years Eve.  It looks like it's neck and neck between 5 drink tickets and open bar...

Unfortunately, while I like Eli's suggestion to give people a choice between those two options, that isn't possible.  The bar is worried that if we have some people partaking in open bar while others aren't, that the open bar people will share drinks with others.  It IS possible, however, to give people a choice between 5 drink tickets and no drink tickets, but everyone has to have the same food options.  So if we combine the results of those who want a 50+ option with those who want a $100+ option, they are winning...  I don't yet know exactly what the price options will be, but this was a rough estimate.

We're also working on themes: we're probably going to do China again, because those Mai Tais and appetizers were SO good last year (spring rolls and crab rangoons.)  But we're probably going to change the other two cities/countries.  We're thinking maybe Monaco,Monte Carlo (so we can keep those yummy pastries from last year, but we need to come up with a themed drink) and Dublin, Ireland (we're probably going to take the dinner theme from here, and beer/wine will be the drink.)  Thoughts?

The other main thing we're thinking about is trying to even out the sexes for this event.  Not that we'll make it exclusively a singles event - obviously we still want our couples and groups of friends to attend, however, there are always more women than men and we'd like to even that out.  What do you guys think?

I like the option of either a set number of drink tickets, or no drink tickets (buy what you want).

The countries sound good: China, Monaco, and Ireland.

As for a Monaco-themed drink, some thoughts:

Hi,

Would the $100 option include dessert?

Thanks,
Eli
How about an Egypt themed night?
YES - currently, after seeing the votes so far, we will likely go with the dinner for all, which includes appetizers, dinner and dessert. Then there will be two options as far as drinks - 5 drink tickets or no drink tickets. Unless the voting changes drastically.

I received this from Margaret:
"I didn't attend last year's event and your write-up of the event starts with the base assumption that everyone knows what happened a year ago. Can you make it more of a "here's what we're thinking overall" rather than "here's what we're changing"?"

Our theme for New Year's Eve is Global Gala - we typically choose 3 countries/cities, and then provide drinks, food and decor based on those themes. Last year we did Shanghai/China, Paris/France, and New Orleans/USA. The appetizers were on the China floor- and they were spring rolls and crab rangoons ---- sooooo good (so good that they added them to their regular menu!) And the drinks were Mai Tais. Dinner was on the New Orleans floor - hurricanes for drinks, and shrimp creole and something else for dinner. Dessert was on the Paris floor with French pastries (also REALLY yummy!) and wine and champagne as the drink. People who received drink tickets could get beer or wine on any floor, and it also included the Mai Tais in China and Hurricanes in New Orleans. The mixed drinks were awesome.

So this year, we are likely keeping the Chinese themes for the apps and drinks, and changing the other two themes. So we'll probably keep the French and italian pastries for dessert in Monaco, but we're looking for a mixed drink to go with that theme. Also, we're holding the event at Lir, which is an Irish establishment, so we thought it was appropriate to do Dublin, Ireland. Beer will be the drink theme, but we are looking for two traditional Irish dish suggestions for dinner - preferably one meat dish and one seafood dish.
I don't think you'd get too big of a crowd if they played music from that period.

A reminder of the Great Gatsby, but instead of drinks of long ago how about food of that time period and music as well.
I kindof agree - sorry Glassic! Music will be from 80s, 90s, 2000s and today. You can actually send us song requests by 12/23 and if we like them, we'll include them in the play list.
How is 31 to 19 neck and neck for the $100 and $150 options, respectively?

Also, how are you going to even out the sexes? Will you limit the attendance once it gets to a certain number of each?
When I wrote that it was neck and neck, it was something like 16 to 16- the ticket option has shot ahead since I wrote that.

And yes, likely we will limit the number of men and women to 200 each, for a total of 400 attendees.

No drink tix. Let people just pay for what they drink. It is fairer for everyone that way. There will be plenty of people that are not drinking because they need to drive, and it will be easier for the bar/facility to make a predictable income for the event and charge you appropriately to rent the venue, etc..
So based on the beer poll, we're going to have Guinness on draft and Harp in bottles available. Our next thing we need your opinion on is music. We'll have two types of music - dance music on 2 floors, and a yet-to-be-named type music on the top floor. What do you think it should be? Give us your thoughts and opinions - make this YOUR event!
The top floor is the dinner floor, right?
